The prolific Sonic Youth guitarist, singer and songwriter returns with another solo album, an entrancing, meditational lo-fi experimental release of fascinating string textures and poetic lines, with guests including Laetitia Sadler, and lyrics by the London-based writer Radieux Radio. Sadler latter joins in on backing vocals the sublimely interweaving guitars, bass and pianos on standout Sans Limites, with regular players Deb Googe from My Bloody Valentine on bass, James Sedwards on guitars and keyboards, Jem Doulton on drums and Jon Leidecker adding electronics, the song breaking into a krautrock momentum, Moore’s voice here, and throughout, soft, intimate and gentle, and capturing a mesmeric, transcendental state referencing the album’s title. The band explore a diverse range of sounds with their instruments, low on the volume and distortion but full of variety, and Radieux Radio’s lyrics are often mysterious, vivid and cryptic, from the fabulous Velvet Underground oddness of opener New In Town, to Shadow, or the lo-fi shoegazey Hypnogram with gorgeous, soft, thrumming bass and poetic, state of semi-conscious lines such as: “I'm closing my eyes / To lucid dreams/ Reach out your arms when you find me / There's moonlight reflections / Out on the lake / Where you end and I begin when we awake … Feeling you there / Next to your fur / Kissing your ears with a whisper / Escaping inside/ Our own telescope/ A universe of shimmering hope.” An album that pulls you into a blissful, intricate state of unhurried, string-plucking sweetness and a deep state of vividness, not least with wonderful closer The Diver. Dive in - it sounds beautiful. As ever, richly pushing the sonic envelope with a legendary veteran’s expertise. Out on Daydream Library Series.
