A fabulous new release by the north Mali nomadic group whose distinctive Tuareg Saharan desert blues is beautifully combined with a country style, with added pedal steel and violin, and a title that is is Tamashek for ‘Beyond The Fear’. With Mali’s ongoing political situation of unrest, the lyrics throughout are poetic allegory calling for unity and peace, and founding member Ibrahim Ag Alhabib sings on Arajghiyine: “Dear brothers all rest, all leisure will always be far from reach unless your homeland is liberated and all the elders can live there in dignity.” With a couple of tracks produced by Daniel Lanois in a project that was recorded in Algeria, but was originally intended to happen in Nashville, it’s a mesmeric album full of gorgeous sounds that combine the genres, particularly on Kek Algham, Tenere Den, Anemouhege, as well as wonderful tracks that typify their style such as Iket Adjen and Imidiwan Mahitinam. Out on Wedge Records.
