A wonderfully eclectic, playfully stylish seventh LP by the American singer, songwriter, producer, and graphic designer Chaz Bear, who integrates wonky and squishy funk, pop, psych, rock, and electronica, and his rich Filipino and African-Columbian heritage. The album, which concerns a variety of whimsical musings on many aspects of modern life and media, also includes a variety of guest collaborators - Sofie Royer and Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Ruban Neilson to Neon Indian’s Alan Palomo and the Mattson 2. Standouts include the funky Postman, hoping for that non-arriving package, and even has a dry hint of Ian Dury about the delivery, another media-themed song Magazine featuring Salami Rose Joe Louis, the laid-back but intricate guitar licks of Millennium, The Medium with Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Loop, Deja Vu, and the lazy, cool, sax-infused and ironic Goes By So Fast. The playfulness and experimentation here seems to express an over-riding message of finding a sense of joy in the face of adversity. Out on Dead Oceans.
