Strong melodies and witty lyrics mark this powerful set of grunge-pop songs by the American indie rocker Mackenzie Scott, whose work has echoes of The Breeders and as well as her British counterpart Du Blonde. Her fifth LP, recorded in 2020 at Middle Farm Studios in Devon, has a very big sound. Romantic love, platonic love, familial love, self-love, and freeing spiritual love all stir around in her fight against the status quo, from the restless, angry energy of Are You Sleepwalking to the building verve of Don’t Go Puttin Wishes in My Head to the grungey bite of Keep the Devil Out. Among other standouts are the humorously wry Hug From A Dinosaur which is very much like Du Blonde’s work, to the more delicate opening of the title track. Anthemic indie rock to the core. Out on Merge Records.
