The title track was a splendid previous Song of the Day, and the rest of this second album by the equally stands up as soul, funk and country by the singer and songwriter Yolanda Quartey from Bristol. Filled with strong, unstoppable melodies, Yola’s range and power are given full expression with a retro balance of instrumentation and orchestration to give it a full airing, but the emphasis on southern soul and country with a 70s feel is perhaps the strongest impression overall with big slices of slide guitar and more, as well as mellower Laurel Canyon-style folk rock, again, like her first album, all recorded and produced in Nashville with The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. With an instant classic feel, other standout tracks include Starlight, Diamond Studded Shoes, the slow but soaring Great Divide, and Barely Alive. Gloriously powerful and defiantly uplifting, superstardom is what she deserves. Out on Easy Eye Sound.
