During the closing stages of our current blog theme about krautrock, and on a day in the UK where temperatures are easily passing 30C, what better way to cool down than with an eccentric solo track, originally released in 2010 on limited vinyl, by one of the founders of Can? Cool in the Pool, an alternative version also appeared on his 1979 mini-album Movies, with a 2006 reissue containing an instrumental version – though on YouTube links the title is often misnamed. Crazy French horn solos, bizarre guitar sounds, an off-beat rhythm, vocal speed-ups – it's all there to enjoy in this song that contains elements of krautrock alongside the whole kitchen sink. Just as when this musician, born in Poland, began work with Can in 1968, he continues do whatever comes into his head, whether that be messing around with shortwave radio sounds, or collaborating with the likes of Jah Wobble, David Sylvian, Brian Eno, or Trio.
