Is there gold in those hills? Perhaps not the precious metal kind, but the story of a dominant sex worker in the Dawson City, Yukon gold rush is the inspiration by this indie rock band fronted by the Toronto singer. The riff is catchy, the chorus joyous, the lyrics dig around in some exploratory innuendo. Skye Wallace embodies a proud Canadian spirit, her roots in folk transplanted into a rockier sound. The video to this song appears to have little or nothing to do with the story – a friendly fight in a local ice rink where curling is the game – but it certainly is unashamedly Canadian. More of Skye Wallace’s music, including her album, can be found here.
I’m ready, and you’re too kind,
I’m the canary and I’m in your mine,
My body lights the way in your lack of thrill and mine.
I’ll be good if you stake your claim,
And my looks are the same.
My body lights the way and you will play my game.
I get bored. I shout out.
It gets cold. I make it hot.
My velvet eyes behold unhappy ones,
The light is red under the midnight sun,
My body lights the way and can be won.
I’ll be worth every coin,
Your soiled dove, your tenderloin,
My body lights the way if you can afford to join.
He’ll play the game, I’ll play him square,
But a hand to me, the knife falls there,
My body is the way to overcome despair.
I get bored. I shout out.
It gets cold. I make it hot.
My velvet eyes behold unhappy ones,
The light is red under the midnight sun,
My body lights the way and can be won.
