Frenetically complex and also mesmerically beautiful, this instrumental number of African and jazz music by the 16-strong collective led by UK-based Djembe player Yahael Camara Onono from the new album Wolo So. Musicians here include members of bands Kokoroko and SEED Ensemble performing work inspired by the traditions and folklore of the Mandé people of West Africa and as well as contemporary jazz on the London scene mixed traditional African instruments with a brass section and keyboards. Wolo So means the essence of kinship in Mandé's Maninka language, and word Balimaya articulates a family model that goes beyond blood relations, but also shared history and experience, of friendship and community, echoing the spirit of Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 and Sun Ra Arkestra. Out on the Jazz re:freshed label. Available via the Bandcamp embed below.
