With a fabulous retro sound of early synth-pop, krautrock, new wave and post-punk, deadpan spoken German lyrics embody a humorous parody of “how artists fetishise Berlin as being the centre of the ‘cool’ art world and the dystopian uniformity”. Formed after meeting together at Wimbledon College of Art, The Umlauts quartet also includes lyricists and vocalists Annabelle Mödlinger and Maria Vittoria Faldini. Influences include naturally, Kraftwerk, but also The Fall, X-Ray Spex, Bjork and The Knife. Their upcoming debut EP is titled ‘Ü’. More of their work can be found on their Bandcamp page and their music is released on PRAH Recordings.
