Cheeky giggles, a cautionary, libidinous tale, and the perfect melodious, witty, pop song. What more could anyone want as the weekend approaches? Neil Hannon’s charming delivery about a possibly married lothario who is asked to check something in the woodshed by a woman of his desires (“there’s nothing in the woodshed, ‘cept maybe some wood” he retorts) is perfectly weighted, leading to the denouement when, finally going to check whatever is in there before a promised carnal encounter, he is knocked out by her accomplices and his car and money is stolen. From their fourth studio album, Casanova of 1996, this was their breakthrough hit, combining orchestral finesse with pop perfection framed in the barbershop innuendo phrase. Hannon and his band released their latest album, Foreverland, in 2016 and are currently touring with a full repertoire.
