After a five-year break, the British trio return with a more free-flowing, experimental, but musically relaxed album than their previous three, but still brimming with oddness and some dark, stark, deathly references. Standout tracks, all of which have catchy riffs and melodies and Joe Newman’s distinctive distorted voice, are The Actor, about a wannabe thespian who goes to Hollywood where things go badly wrong, Hard Drive Gold, which tells the story of a teenager making millions from Bitcoin but with dubious consequences, and U&ME. with its sunny, easy-rolling guitar riff and melody. Yet thunderclaps and a sense of foreboding seem to pervade the record, with the starker and more experimental, broken-bluesy numbers Chicago, Philadelphia and Delta, the menacing Happier When You’re Gone, and the intense and raw emotions the Covid-death themed folky Get Better. The soundtrack to a slow-motion armageddon. Alternative by name, alternative by nature. Out on Infectious Music/BMG.
