An exquisitely dark, lingering fourth LP from the Grammy-winning Pakistani-American singer and composer with a mix of songs in Urdu and English, her resonant, pure voice accompanied by rippling piano, harp, guitar and more in a dark landscape of folk, jazz and traditional music. With particularly gorgeous work by Gyan Riley on guitar and Maeve Gilchrist on harp, it’s a richly nocturnal, beautiful listen, from lovelorn opener Aey Nehin to Na Gul, the more percussive and horn-inflected Raat Ki Rani, Saaqi (with Vijay Eyer) to Whiskey and serene closer Zameen. She is joined by a variety of guests, such as James Francies on Autumn Leaves, and poet Moor Mother on Bola Na, but the album feels at its strongest and purest with just Aftab’s voice and core players creating a mesmeric, transportative experience where the music can fully breathe. Out on Verve Records.
