There’s no rushing the Australian indie singer-songwriter in style or substance, and this attractively laid-back new LP is relaxed in pace, filled with gentle, sometimes melancholy lyrics, many of which seek reconciliation, healing and patience. Fuelled by the frustrations of delay and geography in relationships and friendships, here’s a refreshing matter-of-factness here in music and theme, these songs feeling like one-take demos, and while Barnett’s guitar playing is also one of her strengths alongside her strolling vocal delivery, there’s a complementary element with accompaniment by Stella Mozgawa on percussion and additional instruments. On opener Rae Street, where Barnett describes her slowness in the morning, with the garbage trucks trundle, “Time is money/And money is no man’s friend.” Other standouts include If I Don't Hear From You Tonight, Sunfair Showdown, Here’s The Thing, and the catchy, the catchy Write A List Of Things To Look Forward To, and the semi-spoken drawl of Take It Day By Day. Patience is required on both sides, as the last track, Oh The Night, a slowly plodding, piano number expresses it: “Sorry I’ve been slow, you know. / It takes a little time for me to show how I really feel/Won’t you meet me somewhere in the middle / On our own timezone.” Out on Milk! Records, Mom + Pop Music and Marathon Artists.
