Joyously playful, colourful, flamboyant, humorous, dynamic, grandiose but also tender pop-rock by the supergroup of solo artists, Orla Gartland, dodie, Greta Isaac and Martin Luke Brown, whose vocal harmonies exude emotion, but also unsinkable joie-de-vivre. Variously taking turns with the lead vocals but opulently backed up by the others into four-part harmonies, it’s a veritable feast of brilliant pop, sometimes feeling like a musical, sometimes reminiscent of Scissor Sisters, sometimes classic melancholy 70s piano-pop, at others pumping, sweary, sexy 90s indie-rock, from the title track to High In Brighton, Hell Of A Ride to the catchy glam-rock style Strawberry Jam, the unaccompanied, tender Lights Out, the gentle, sensitive Close One, and even more so the beautifully melancholy, acoustic You, Me, Lonely (“think of the kids we’ll never have”) or Lights Out, but then the slowly building, but ultimately gloriously over-the-top last track, The Grand Finale. It’s a tour-de-force of both sensitive, but also playful mischief and energetic, harmony-rich vocal performances. With their quirky videos and visualizers, a group that exudes enormously energised joy – summing up that album title bang on. Out on Decca.
