Dark, vivid, pagan, hedonistic, carnal goth-dancefloor experimental electronica and more by the Chicago-based multi-disciplinary superbly alternative artist Haley Fohr and her otherworldly, mesmerically rich, four-octave voice. This is an album that instantly casts a spell, from powerful opener Megaloner, with just a slight flavour of Depeche Mode, and invoking “fate in all the fires you make” into the another standout, the thrumming, throbbing, pagan-folk dancefloor former Song of the Day Canopy of Eden, building with helicopter blade beats and Fohr’s soaring vocals. She’s a truly unique talent - from the slower, quieter Skeleton Key, to the dark, deep foreboding, saturated sounds of Anthem of Me, running like an oily river under soaring strings and that rising, ethereal operatic voice. There are oddball wonders aplenty here, but another standout, Truth, is a phantasmagorical club cut propelled by broken rhythms, elastic bass, and hammond organ. And finally comes the slow-build release of final track It Takes My Pain Away. The overall effect is as she described the chrysalis of previous standalone single God Dick: “A love banshee bursting through porcelain skin one hair at a time until, finally, the beast within is fully on display.” The beast then is fully released – beautiful, dark and strange. Extraordinary, unique, resonant work. Out on Matador Records.
