Dynamic and brilliantly experimental debut album by the very promising young post-punk Brooklyn band brimming with intricate guitars, changes of pace, vaulting from the abstract to the intimate. Low Era was a previous Song of the Day, and yet another great new find by British producer and mixer Dan Carey who worked with Fontaines DC and many other auspicious debuts. Opener Rain Dance begins at a frenetic pace with high, clanging riffs and drums, single Fantasies/Survival has stop-start playful echoes of LCD Soundsystem and The Strokes, while First World Warrior is a quieter, more intimate number with their trademark high-fretwork twinkling guitars, slowly building to a more ethereal crescendo, while Disco, a centrepiece single has a thunderous drum sound alongside frontman frontman Cameron Winter’s diverse range of vocal delivery, hard or high, low or soft, as the song moves through several sections. The title track is a slower, confident, and even has some parallels with Britain’s experimental Black Midi. As the final track’s title suggests, with a fresh, new wave energy, Opportunity Is Knocking for a very bright future from sweaty basement to stadium. Out on Partisan Records.
