A third album of ingeniously brilliant keyboard blips ‘n’ beats, squelchy, catchy, funky fun from the electro-psych-pop space alien band (actually from Manchester) packed with entertaining tunes about robots, the climate crisis and more. Lead single Get A Wriggle On is infectiously catchy, sounding like a cross between a 1970s childrens’ TV theme, but building to a frenzied climax to underline a serious message about climate crisis. Wanderlust is a thumpy rave number about space travel, and landing on our “charming ball of rock”. Self-Repair Protocol is described by frontman Zpor as a “vignette written from the perspective of a malfunctioning robot, which could read as a metaphor for self-care.” Other standouts include DNA, the wriggly Altered State, the wonderfully oddball rhythms of First Encounter and the title track. Restlessly inventive and fun, but HENGE are best encountered live (see embedded playlist below), where the audience is always seduced by the charm of their crazy costumes and dancers, not to mention the catchy tunes. Out on Cosmic Dross Records.
