Dayton Ohio’s prolific Robert Pollard and band return with another in a long line of albums of muscular fuzz-guitar rock decorated with ear-catching, oddball, original lyrics and powerful riffs. Already the second LP this year after La La Land and the eighth album in three years, there’s simply no stopping the Pollard train, free of the shackles of big label schedules and marketing strategies. Pollard remains on fine form, from the chugging strums of Meet the Star to the jangly 12-string Byrds-reminiscent beauty of Cruiser’s Cross. Other standouts include the slowly building but powerfully psychedelic closing title track, the witty Don’t Blow Your Dream Job, the see-saw catchiness of Why Won’t You Kiss Me, the acoustic but strange Chain Dance and Mother Mirth, or yet more animal-themed oddities such as Cats On Heat, or Radioactive Pigeons. Uncompromisingly independent and inspiring.
