The third album from Afro-Cuban French twins Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Díaz is a sensual, eclectic mix of R&B, hip hop and more, drawing on their rich heritage, and inspired by a passage the Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead. Produced by XL Recordings boss Richard Russell, it’s a mesmeric fusion of influences and escapes any single genre definition, variously as before, singing in French, Yoruba and English interchangeably, with their sound also incorporating the traditional instruments of their youth, such as cajóns and Batá drums. But if one thing unites them it’s their identity, incorporated in tracks Sister 2 Sister, Made of Gold, an incantational ode to familial forefathers featuring Coventry rapper Pa Salieu, the deliciously minimal Lavender & Red Roses featuring Jorja Smith complementing their vocal harmonising and the powerful and political closing tracks Rise Above featuring BERWYN, and Los Muertos. Transcendent, pure in sound, and steeped in history. Out on XL Recordings.
