Wondrously wild, inventive experimental pop debut LP by the duo of Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye, whose entrancing fusion of electronica, classical and theatrical strings, dance music and witty, agile sonic combinations sometimes slip playfully into reverse. The pair, who met at London's Guildhall School of Music & Drama, formed the band in 2016. Ellery’s voice soars high with a delicate charm, Skye’s instrumentals and arrangements are infinitely inventive. Standouts include Concrete Over Water, a former Song of the Day, Glasgow, the oddball acoustic guitar and string arrangement which sounds like a psychedelic Joni Mitchell, the dreamy What’s It All About?, the organ-driven arrhythmic, squeaky whirl and swirl of Jennifer B with vocal samples, and the vowel-pronouncing, crunchy-beat dance-music closer 50/50. One of the most original and striking debuts of the year. Out on Rough Trade.
