A striking, stylish debut by the Toronto artist, also co-written and co-produced with Duncan Hay Jennings, the frontwoman of Canadian post-punk outfit FRIGS delivers a mix of dark, deep, smoky-voiced pop, crafted krautrock, shimmery shoegaze, and goth-electronica. Her themes are vulnerability and connection, with a range of styles bringing and experimental arpeggio-rich, melodic sounds, with from the krautrocky, dramatic opener Drastic, the syncopated opening of Backs of Birds with its interspersing of spoken voices and building into a big chorus, the thundering Closer To You, to the see-sawing riff and rhythms Hammer. There’s an atmospheric country twang to Twilight, while the single Stretch The Struggle has more the thrumming beat of 80s electro-pop, and Rags is steamy goth-indie-shoegazey-grungey fuzz, topped with a visceral roar. Overall a musical range that’s impressive, perhaps still experimenting, but all sewn together by that deep, distinctive voice. An artist flourishing in her own right, and with no doubt even more to come. Out on Sub Pop Records.
