Inspired by a rediscovery of her diaries when 13 and under, this fourth LP by the LA and Austin, Texas singer-songwriter is a deep dive into inner emotions, awash with soft focus, beautiful, swooning, lush melodies and her strong, sensual voice. From the orchestral strings of opener Made of Glass, there’s a dark, slow melancholy, reminiscent of Lana Del Rey, and 80s feel to the overall style, particularly on the soft-sheen pop of Physical, but with songs that transcend an era. Unconditional appears to be traditional love song, but is also about the ups and downs of the music business. Other standouts include Tattoo, the gentle disco feel of Heartburn, the smooth sophistication of Champion, and woozy closing track, Bed. Out on Captured Tracks.
