Wonderfully delicate, deliciously paced, lo-fi indie folk by the British artist of Greek-Brazilian heritage and former member of Goat Girl, with her second album, following 2022’s Giant Palm. There’s something melancholy, full of yearning, but also spookily old folk about her vocal style, a collection of well-chosen instruments discreetly accompanying - including violin, guitar, harmonium, trumpet, saxophone and other woodwind, often very stripped back, stark and exposed, particuarly on opener Gentle. Second track Kaley has more of a swing to it, with a jubilant, saxophone-led chorus, and the most indie of this release. Feed My Release draws on the sepia-toned traditions of The Roches, John Prine and Loudon Wainwright III but imbues them with the kind of stark confessional songwriting of Mount Eerie. My Sweet Body seems to go back even further in time, weaving delicate string sounds and with a ghostly beauty. Further Away and Moving are other gems, stripped back and again receding into more pastoral time. Throughout, from the long held high notes of High One, all the way to gently fading closer Star, a time-transporting release always exploring and achieving more with less, with impeccably delicate delivery. Out on Sub Pop.
