Stirringly upfront new rock-pop album by the Chicago singer-songwriter and pianist about honesty, resilience and sobriety following a big relationship breakup following his 2019 album, Changes. There’s a fresh sound here made by almost entirely recording in a church and on tape. Opener Alameda Apartments has a rich, ripping piano sound, and while upbeat, recounts the day his girlfriend left. Problems is a simpler, but wistfully addictive tune. Can’t Stop The Rain is decorated with bluesy guitar and a syncopated rhythm. Francis has a timeless songwriting style – and one that could be at home at any point since the 1970s, rocking, rolling, bluesy and soulful. Other standouts include Can’t Stop The Rain, Prometheus, and BNYLV. This is an album where breakup bounces back with raw vitality. There’s extra dimension to the sound too, mixed by the Grammy-winning producer Dave Fridmann (also known for working with The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, MGMT). Out on ATO.
