Released in last month by the Australia-Berlin electrofunk/disco quintet, a superbly catchy package of sounds, styles and danceability based on a 24-hour concept across a truly diverse 19 tracks. Opener Light brings mellow electronica morphing into crisp instrumental funk, followed by Free, with added high vocals and bright, breezy piano. The next track, Comingback, ups the pace even more, rattling along with a fast syncopated energy with orchestral swishes and swirls. Parcels have a 70s Chic feel about them, and this continues apace throughout the album, particularly on the jazzy Somethinggreater which reveals their Daft Punk connection in its chord sequence (the French pair were involved in the co-writing of their 2017 single Overnight), while Daywalk has a deeper jazz vibe, echoing elements of the many bass strings of Thundercat. Closing the first disc, Outside is a rather moving, slow love song decorated with orchestral strings and surging emotions. Across the next 10 tracks highlights include the fantastically funky Famous, the very grand LordHenry, the cinematic, slow Nightwalk, the country-style slow love song Once, and closing track Inside. Parcels continue in a growing crowd of excellent Australian bands, becoming perhaps the funk/disco to King Gizzard’s prog. A fabulous follow-up to their debut self-titled 2018 album by keyboardist Louie Swain, keyboardist/guitarist Patrick Hetherington, bassist Noah Hill, drummer Anatole "Toto" Serret, and guitarist Jules Crommelin. Out on Because Music.
