Tremendously high-quality writing and performance by the singer-songwriter from Houston, Texas in this dynamic third album which mixes folk-country and Americana-rock, acoustic with electric, poignant lyrics and excellent vocals. On songs variously on heartbreak, stories of sabotage, confusion, and surrender, McHone moves between full-on blues-rock Springsteen and sound, especially on opener Hawks Don’t Share to quieter, more intimate numbers, including the the fireside-country Fingernail Moon, End of the World, or the English traditional Folk Song. But there are many enjoyable variants from the beautiful Sweet Magnolia to the catchy, meaty horn and handclap parts on Only Lovers, while Someone Else balances acoustic and acoustic with real potency, helped across the album by collaborator, the Canadian musician and producer Daniel Romano. But perhaps best of all is McHone’s strength of voice and lyrics, having an expression, sensitivity and intelligence that echoes Richard and Linda Thompson as well as The Kinks’ Ray Davies, especially on the title track. Overall a wonderfully warm, rich, mature piece of work. Out on Loose Music.
