This second LP by the LA-based American Sasami Ashworth is one of strikingly eclectic genre contrasts of shade and light, from full blast nu-metal and rock, to gorgeous melodies of country-pop and folk, and even a coda of classical music. The album pivots from one to the other, from the raucous opener, Skin A Rat, which for any first listener will give a false impression of the rest of the album, before it morphs then into swagger of standout track, The Greatest, previously highlighted on Song of the Day. Of the quieter numbers, Call Me Home and Tried To Understand are definite further standouts with wonderful, timeless melodies and chord changes lifting further by Sasami’s rich voice. Say It meanwhile enters goth-electronica territory, and Make It Right is more boogie glam-rock. But the eclectic is particularly at its height towards the record’s finale, featuring the classically rich cellos of Feminine Water Toil and the anthemic Not A Love Song, which fuses many of these styles into one, brought together by Sasami’s strong, resonant delivery with a rock guitar behind it. A uniquely original blend of restless, inventive quality with great songwriting. Out on Domino.
