Spiritualized – And Nothing Hurt
The eighth album fronted by Jason Pierce, and it's a mesmeric, triumphant, swirling mixture of dream-state psychedelia, melancholy, rock'n'roll and experimentation. "If you want wasted, loaded, permanently folded … I’m your man," he sings, while Here It Comes (the Road) Let’s Go is a beautiful countryside road trip. Out on Bella Union.
Spiritualized - I'm Your Man
Teleman – Family of Aliens
Third album of deliciously catchy, witty, indie pop from the high voice of Thomas Sanders and co since the core three changed their name from being Pete and the Pirates in 2012. Somewhere between Hot Chip and Franz Ferdinand, this is a consistent, clean and neat balance between synths and guitar. The singles Cactus and Song For A Seagull should hopefully catapult them to even wider audiences. Out on Moshi Moshi.
Teleman - Cactus
Maribou State - Kingdoms in Colour
Second album from the British electronic duo of Chris Davids and Liam Ivory, with a richly varied, globetrotting kaleidoscopic collection of many club and other sounds and influences from cities as varied as Sydney, Lisbon and Delhi. Many collaborators included US funk group Khruangbin, regular singer Holly Walker, and samples interweaved such as Kashmere Stage Band, a cult ’70s school group from Houston, Texas led by teacher Conrad O. Johnson. On Vale, a sample from Belgian jazz singer Melanie de Baliso’s I Feel You. Fascinating mixtures. Out on Ninja Tune.
Maribou State - Feel Good (feat. Khruangbin)
Menace Beach – Black Rainbow Sound
Deeply satisfying work by the Leeds-based indie band on their third album, moving away far more into rich orchestration and old-school electronic instruments, and including a guest appearance from Brix Smith. Out on Memphis Industries.
Menace Beach – Black Rainbow Sound
Yves Tumor – Safe In The Hands of Love
This enigmatic Tennessee experimentalist is never going to deliver anything conventional, and this swirling musical cloud of oddity is hard to pin down. Noises pieces move between spoken words statements of personal heartbreak and melancholy, clever sampling, Avalanches style, run into rhythmic tornados of powerful trance and dance. It can be at once challenging, at other times rewarding. Out on Warp Records.
Yves Tumor - Licking An Orchid (ft. James K)
Chilly Gonzales – Solo Piano III
Final album, after a six-year gap, of the solo piano trilogy from the clever and offbeat mind and fingers of this interesting Canadian, which as well as wonderful simplicty and beauty, also offers some moments of suspension and dissonence. Out on Gentle Threat.
Chilly Gonzales – Pretenderness
