The former Beta Band main man returns with one of his finest solo albums yet, a groovy protest record (“a big fuck off to Brexit”) drawing in different cultures and throwing a party for Britain’s rich heritage from an immigrant population. Two songs epitomising this is powerfully building chant of No More, and also the tasty grooves of Brixton Fish Fry, both songs featuring guest vocalist Javed Bashir, and in the latter, among others, the beautiful dulcimer-style santoor played by Kaviraj Singh and Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor on synths. This album is strong in its simple messages, recalls the syncopated rhythms of classic 90s indie, including Beta Band, as well as Primal Scream’s Screamadelica, very much part of Mason’s oeuvre. Other standouts including Mars Man, The People Say, All Over Again, Travelling Hard, I’m On My Way, and his quietly moving vocals on piano-led Pieces of Me. Out on Double Six / Domino.
