A beautiful, evocative north-east England folk collaboration between Rachel Unthank and Paul Smith, frontman of Maxïmo Park, and produced by Field Music’s David Brewis in a mix of the traditional and new. Smith is better known for indie anthems, but his gentle baritone voice and ever-present accent make for perfect vocal pairing with Rachel, who as well as with her sister and co from the Unthanks, has previously collaborated with several other artists. With added woodwind, guitar, harmonium drones and sensitive percussion, there are many gems here, including Rachel’s original number Seven Tears, Graeme Miles’ Horumarye (about the sound of wind whistling over moors), What Maks Makems, The Natural Urge, the traditional number Lord Bateman, and Lal Waterson’s Waterson’s ode to drunkenness, Red Wine Promises. A cosy winter delight. Out on Billingham Records.
