A welcome return by Conor O’Brien and co with the Irish band’s sixth LP brings their usual blissful, beautiful melodies alongside an otherworldly, dreamlike, sometimes psychedelic, even gospel air. Singles The First Day and So Simpatico (see our previous Song of the Day) play on the idea of travelling back to other parts of your life, parallel universes and selves. On The First Day there’s that head-swimming sense of how it “eels like falling on love on the first day of the rest of your life” with horns and xylophones, on the opener there’s “the sense of something bigger than you”, while on Circles In The Firing Line there’s a jolt between realities, and O’Brien comes around with “I’m late – I’ve got a date with doom… They’re fucking up my favourite dream”. Soul, gospel, folk and electronica intertwine with lots of sax and choir. A mesmerising delight that delves into new levels of the musical as well as mental consciousness. Out on Domino.
