With the global climate increasingly unstable, this release by the London electronica artist and producer, originally out in April feels apposite, each piece title a different temperature, freezing, thawing, and heating, colouring moods and states with intricate synths and vocal improvisations. They variously glide, crackle, crash, swirl, build, glisten, twinkle, and fade, evoking a world that has happened, and will happen, long before and after humans. Highlights include the opener 25°C, the dark and melancholic read on the 0°C with a hailstorm of steely beats and static, the 17°C, evoking a timelapse of springtime in the city, an audio expression of an accelerating frenzy of frames and sounds from car horns to screeching brakes, 10°C’s echoey jazz organ sounds, and vocal experimentation on the 30°C. But it’s best experience in one evolving, late-night or solitary walk session. Out on Ghostly International / Warp.
Loraine James has also has releases Hyperdub releases, Nothing EP and albums Detail, and Reflection.
