The third album by the trio fronted by the Edinburgh-born singer-songwriter Ruarri Joseph is clever, catchy, bluesy, rocking and wry, filled with wistful lines, dry wit and great riffs. It’s been a long road for 39-year-old Joseph, who previously released four solo album with Atlantic, and hopefully with this new album on the Chrysalis label with see them eventually attract bigger audiences after lockdown. Overall the band’s style is a swampy blues rock, with elements of Cake, Kings of Leon and G Love & The Special Sauce. Joseph’s lyrics have a particular penchant for vivid independent one liners within a narrative, with a clever, relaxed delivery, such as on Wake Up: “Mud on the new sheets /Ash on the teeth /The fizz of the ginger /She won’t say yes /But I can’t say no / Thank god for the radio.” Other standout tracks include The Deep End, Move On, Jesus Died A Young Man, an the beautiful acoustic-led closing title track.
