You ready? Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh, no, no. An uncharacteristically commercial behemoth to be appearing on SOTD, though while it's hard to resist a song that is so undeniably catchy and brilliant, passionate pop, where does the inspiration, and indeed music come from? US music's super couple Beyoncé Knowles and Jay-Z do their thang, taken from the former's 2003 album Dangerously In Love, with a fusion of hip hop, soul, RnB and 70s funk. It was written and composed in collaboration with co-producer Rich Harrison and Eugene Record; using samples and inspiration from the latter's band, The Chi-Lites and their 1970 song Are You My Woman (Tell Me So), from another perspective of course, but what a great track, without which Beyoncé would never have had this signature hit. So let's enjoy this, and that original record, but definitely ignore all subsequent remixes and copies:
I look and stare so deep in your eyes
I touch on you more and more every time
When you leave, I'm begging you not to go
Call your name two or three times in a row
Such a funny thing for me to try to explain
How I'm feeling and my pride is the one to blame
'Cause I know I don't understand
Just how your love can do what no one else can …
Seems to be a misunderstanding
Bout who you belong to
I'm tired of he saying, she saying
I don't know where he came from
But he better go back where he's been
Cause I don't want my heart broken
Don't wanna commit no sin
Cause I'm so tired
Oh, you set my soul on fire
I'm so tired
Well, you set my soul on fire
Are you my woman, tell me so
Are you my woman, tell me so
Are you my woman, tell me so
Are you my woman, let me go
Just get on down …
