All that pressure got you down
Has your head spinning all around
Feel the rhythm, check the ride
Come on along and have a real good time
Like the days of stompin' at the Savoy
Now they freak, oh what a joy
Just come on down, to fifty four
Find a spot out on the floor
Continuing songs by artists who made outstanding performances at this year's Glastonbury, we highlight the 1978 release No 1 hit from the band formed by guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards from their second studio album C'est Chic. Something of a signature tune, it highlights the disco craze of the time, and remains as timelessly popular as ever, including with the Savoy reference coming from a song of the same name by Edgar Sampson.
There's a sublime bassline, classic funky Rodgers guitar, and catchy vocals, but there is a twist to the moves. The song came out of a jamming session at Edwards' flat on New Year's Eve 1977, after the band were due to meet Grace Jones at the New York's famous Studio 54, but the band were turned away by the club's famously aggressive door staff. The result? A fabulous song, but the famous refrain, "Freak Out!" was originally sung, and directed at the club's staff, as "Fuck Off!".
And here is a clip of Chic's 2017 Glastonbury appearance:
