A life-affirming, survival-craving postpunk belter from the latest EP of veteran band who, as contemporaries of the likes of Subway Sect and Wire, first released singles Swell Map's Rather Records in 1979 and 1980. Comprising Gary Jones – lead vocals, and here, some rather fine whistling to accompany the driving riffs, with Jon Hodgson on guitar/backing vocals, Barney Russel on guitar, Lee McFadden on bass and backing vocals and Stuart Hilton on drums. The background of this number has a life-and-death theme coming from dark anxiety. Gary Jones’s lyrics were inspired by awaiting a second MRI scan appointment to confirm the presence brain tumour. Fortunately the test came up negative. So during these dark times, the lights remain on fortunately, and the music continues to play.
Cult Figures’ work is out on Gare du Nord Records, and more of it can be enjoyed on Bandcamp.
Don’t turn the light out
Don’t turn the light out
I don’t wanna see the darkness in my mind
Don’t turn the light out
Don’t turn the light out
I don’t wanna to see the darkness deep inside
Turn up the music
Sweet country music
I don’t wanna hear the darkness in my mind
Turn up the music
Sweet country music
I don’t wanna hear the demon deep inside
Don’t turn the light out
Don’t turn the light out
I don’t wanna see the darkness in my mind
Turn up the music
Sweet country music
I don’t wanna hear the evil deep inside
Give me a world that’s shining bright
I don’t ever want to see the lights out …
