On the day of Brexit, when UK officially leaves the European Union, a new, silly song from the ex-frontman of Welsh, psychedelic experimentalists, Gorky’s Zygotic Minzi that may have no connection at all, but the artist name and label – National Elf – has a certain irony. Euros Childs has released multiple solo albums since Gorky’s finished in 2006, and this is from his latest, the wonderfully titled Gingerbread House Explosion recorded with fellow Welshman Stephen Black, aka Sweet Baboo. The song has echoes of some of Paul McCartney’s ironic piano ditties, here with a basic 12-bar blues structure.
And of Brexit itself, who knows what will happen, or whether this song has anything at all to do with it? But as the lyrics say: “Screw it up … Well it’s the one thing I can do and I can do it so well … screw it up.”
