Yesterday we highlighted two of Joni MItchell's finest, and with a California connection, here an English singer-songwriter with a voice that soars with comparable quality, alongside beautiful, otherworldly music from the Tunng frontman and producer. It's barely possible to define the music in this project, perhaps a form of folktronica, but with a name inspired by Marling's niece and the concept of dancing yeti, it truly is straight from the right-hand hemisphere. LIndsay wrote the music with a mixture of Moogs, gorgeous flute sounds, synths and drum patterns. Marling's lyrics are said to be inspired by early 20th-century surrealism and the absurdist poetry of Edward Lear and Ivor Cutler, making a strange narrative about the commodification of curated public personas, the mundane absurdity of individualism. Either way, the result is otherworldly, and ethereally beautiful, taking off, like MItchell's song, in California though with different perspective: Fresh from the LUMP album, out today, and featured in our other section.
[Verse 1]
If you should be bored in California
I'm sure I'm not the first to warn you
Don't read in too much to all the signs and turns
Keep your wits about you with your mind freedom
If you should be bored in California
I'm sure I'm not the last to warn you
The natives scaled the mountains for the promise of the sea
But deem the land unworthy of the evidently
[Chorus]
We salute the sun because
When the day is done
We can't believe what we've become
Something else to pray upon
And evidently
It's just another vanity
Another something to believe
The curse of the contemporary
We salute the sun because
When the day is done
We can't believe what we've become
Something else to pray upon
And evidently
It's just another vanity
Another something to believe
The curse of the contemporary
(Curse of the contemporary)
[Verse 2]
If you should be bored in California
I'm sure I'm not the first to warn ya
Don't read in too much to all the signs and turns
Keep your wits about you with your mind freedom
If you should be bored in California
I'm sure I'm not the last to warn ya
The natives scaled the mountains for the promise of the sea
But deem the land unworthy of the evidently
[Interlude]
(We salute the sun because
When the day is done
We can't believe what we've become
Something else to pray upon
And evidently
It's just another vanity
Another something to believe
The curse of the contemporary
We salute the sun because
When the day is done
We can't believe what we've become
Something else to pray upon
And evidently
It's just another vanity
Another something to believe
The curse of the contemporary)
