The next body-aware song comes in a new one from the Norwegian pop-punk quartet – a cartoonish, sugar-rush tribute to the energising red stuff that runs right through us all. A band newly signed to the Bella Union label, and an debut album due out in February, their high-octane indie guitar rhythms and singing style reminiscent of Deerhoof, Weaves and Le Tigre.
Incidentally Pomo Poko is also the title of a 1994 Japanese animated comedy-drama directed by Isao Takahata, and animated by Studio Ghibli. The words refer to tanuki, Japanese shapeshifing raccoon dogs who fight against humans who invade their land, and among various talents, can use their giant testicles as parachutes and weapons. Pom poko indicates the sound their make when hitting their own bellies as a form of Tanuki-bayashi meditative drumming. The trailer is also below.
