After Houseplants by Squid, what’s the connection? With the title Diggers, it could be gardening, but these short, snappy numbers by the postpunk London trio hit more on housing problems and also have a drummer lead singer. Drummer/vocalist Toby Burroughs, violinist/vocalist Rosa Brook, and bassist/vocalist Tom Jones are a tight unit, creating catchy, chunky, edgy songs that thrum and skim with a fabulous precision and deceptive simplicity with a stripped-back combination of three distinct sounds. A wonderful fusion of acoustic and electric, wrought with caustic wit and anger, here about about homelessness in the first song, and housing developers in the second. Both songs come from the album PZ1, named after a screwdriver size.
