Hello! And welcome to the third song a new Song Bar series. This introduction won't stay here after the first few posts, but what is it all about? Song of the Day does what it says on the tin. And why? It's just a celebration of great songs. Some will be well known, some more obscure, and some brand new. Some will be on YouTube, some on other formats. They might be loosely connected by theme, sound or artist, but the main reason is that they flow into each other and offer a great way to start the day. They will gradually build up into playlists, and larger patterns will emerge.
Could a pop song be any better? Listen past the cheesy clothes of 1975 glam pop and the sexy, or otherwise, dress sense of the Swedish quartet to this masterpiece. Written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson, and here with Agnetha Fältskog taking the lead on vocals, it moves, unusually for the period, from a classical opening in D minor into a joyous chorus of F and C major, capturing with these majestic chord changes and a superlative melody, the emotional swings of uncertain, faltering love, not unlike that which was happening within the band’s own pairings. John Lennon, Pete Townshend, Ray Davies and John Grant have all described it as one of the greatest songs ever written. Not bad, eh?
