Bright, uplifting and elegantly shuffling in sound, but melancholy in lyrics - a classic combination – this new single by the New York folk-pop singer-songwriter is about self-recrimination:“You have nothing and no one but yourself to blame”.
As Annie puts it: “This song is about sadness and feeling completely let down. It’s that sinking feeling of realising you didn’t mean what you thought you did to someone, and coming to terms with that immediate loss in that moment. Heartbroken and still wishful, yet self-protecting.”
The song also features frequent collaborator Polly Paulusma and is released on Dharma Records. To explore and enjoy more by Annie Dressner, see also the other embedded link below, and her Bandcamp page.
You have nothing and no one but yourself to blame
Bored and lonely isn't an excuse to live this way
And you'll never be who I need you to be
And you'll never be who I thought you were
And you've never once been there me, never really
And there's nothing left to say and there's nowhere left to go
Oh, there's nothing left to say and there's nowhere left to go
It took me 18 years to try and get to know you
It took me 18 years to finally trust you
It took hardly any time at all to feel let down
I feel stupid for trying, even stupider for crying over you
I only met you about five times
And I'd always chalked it to busy lives
Tonight I saw what I needed to see
That I'm nothing to you
It changed everything for me
Yeah, I'm nothing to you
It changed everything
And there's nothing left to say and there's nowhere left to go
Oh, there's nothing left to say and there's nowhere left to go
Maybe she was right the whole time, the whole time
Maybe she was right the whole time, the whole time
Maybe she was right the whole time, the whole time
Maybe she was right
Maybe she was right
And there's nothing left to say and there's nowhere left to go
Oh, there's nothing left to say and there's nowhere left to go
It took me 18 years to try and get to know you
It took me 18 years to finally trust you
It took me hardly any time at all to feel let down
I feel stupid for trying, even stupider for crying over you
But I still love you, somehow
What's up with you?
