After yesterday’s piano piece by Naoko Sakata, the Japanese artists abroad connection continues with the frenzy and energy of the psych rock band based in Montreal who combine traditional instruments with rock in with rapid changes of pace. The band are guitarists Serge Nakauchi Pelletier & Hidetaka Yoneyama, bass player Mishka Stein, drummer Ian Lettre, flautist Yuki Isami, trombone player Etienne Lebel, and performance artist and vocalist Maya Kuroki.
Meikyu is a dark, swirling, feverish number designed to capture the story of a young character trying to escape the grasp of a twisted spirit that took the form of a labyrinthe-like mansion. Yoru Ni, translated as ‘At Night’ was initially written by Nakauchi-Pelletier when arising from bed in the small hours, the music “basically ‘pushed’ into my brain by some strange unknown forces’’, and has a surf rock style with Maya’s vocals and Yuki’s flute adding a mythical quality. Both tracks from their forthcoming album Shirushi, out on the Kill Rock Stars label. To enjoy more of their work, visit their website, or Bandcamp page.
