This 1962 recording by the preacher and singer who made no fewer than 38 albums over a 55-year career is one of the most influential – a true landmark that fused soul, gospel and R&B. Written by Bert Berns, talent behind many 60s hits, including The Isley Brothers' Twist and Shout, and Them's Here Comes The Night, his work was originally rejected by Burke, but the combination of that the emotional song and one of the greatest soul singers of all time was dynamite. A major influence on The Rolling Stones, one of several bands to record cover versions.
