On this, the shortest day of 2021, the winter solstice, a poetic pair of songs older and recent by the group composed of poet laureate Simon Armitage and musicians Patrick Pearson and Richard Walters, with Rozi Plain as guest on the second. Winter Solstice was released in the spring, in the spirit of light and hope on the horizon, even though it captures the inner dialogue and beauty is the exquisite sadness of unrequited love. Musically it take inspiration from Prefab Sprout.
From the EP of the same name, the exquisite Cascade Theory, as the band describes, “takes a scientific principle and applies it to a social or psychological setting. Things crash into each other - especially thoughts and ideas - and the resulting fragmentation is both bewildering and exciting”, and is also full of beautiful lyrics spoken by Armitage, such as the the image of flecks of paint colliding with space junk to break everything up. Musically there are echoes of Future Islands, especially the bass lines. “It’s the real world and the world of the imagination colliding at full pelt; what’s left is stardust and glitter. Rozi was the perfect collaborator for this track - we’re big fans and she brings her unique voice and idiosyncratic style to the song."

First I feel that desire beyond no one's being on your side
First I feel that I wanted to, we just hold on over time, over time
It’s cold in small hours
Bolting the door against dark nights
Scanning for miracles panning for glimmers and signs
Knowing at best I'm the 10th or 11th in line
I know I'm not really your favourite person, but you’re mine
Desire as a sylph-figured creature who changes her mind
I know I'm not really your favourite person, but you're mine
First I feel that desire beyond no one's being on your side
First you feel that I wanted to, we just hold on over time, over time
This is the view
Here's how it looks from the sidelines
Clutching at straws reaching from shadows and lifelines
Dredging the shallows from proof and clues in the half-light
This is the news, this is me living the half-life
(Desire as a sylph-figured creature who changes her mind)
I heard you've been dishing the dirt
That I'm selfless of kind, more like a brother or sister
Not really your type
And later I whispered "I need to be worshipped, not just liked"
First I feel you don't want to, we just hold on over time, over time
"I need to be worshipped, not just liked"
Got to the part where the snowdrops reveals in sunlight
Spare me the sympathy card with his chorus and dumb rhymes
Tear me apart with the love heart declaring "Love is blind"
I know I’m not really your favourite person but you’re mine
(Desire as a sylph figured creature who changes her mind)
I know I'm not really your favourite person but you’re mine
First I feel that desire beyond no one's being on your side
(Desire as a sylph figured creature who changes her mind)
First you feel that I wanted to, we just hold on over time, over time
The world fragmented, I got things wrong
Play a fellow-guard at the church and numb
"Ran the clock down as the poem," they said
Drop the tight bow in nextdoor's pond and call it a song
Broke a borrow side on a hiding rock
Mowing wet hay
Hay, hay hay, hay hay, hay
Space junk colliding with space junk
Upsetting the top saints
And all it takes is a flack of paint
You're breaking up, you're breaking up
(One thing follows the other)
You're breaking up
(One thing follows the other
One thing follows the other)
(Ding, Ding, Ding
You're bowling a pan
We need everyone sitting
Now everyone stand)
Onе thing follows the other (Ah-aw-ah)
One of you follow thе other
Look who it isn't someone snaped
In millennial square, It was market day
Lobes and cakes like diffuse minds
It build a buisyness park in a green field
While I fittled about and fine-tuned
The useless haiku of a Rubik's cube
Space junk colliding with space junk
Upsetting the top saints
And all it takes is a flack with paint
But still the crows will come a long way
Counting the cat eyes driving on fuse
Pilfering coins from rode-side trains
Captain’s Log: "Satelite six with mission control"
OK if I make the tears happen now, old man
And in the face of Jesus I saw the orang-utan
(Ding, Ding, Ding
Your bowling a pan
We need everyone sitting
Now everyone stand)
One thing follows the other (Ah-aw-ah)
One of you follow the other
[Thingy, thingy, follow-ollow, it's the other-other
It's the other-other, Follow-thing, follow-thing]
(One thing follows the other
One thing follows the other
One thing follows the other)
