Esoteric, sweeping, warm-embracing experimental rock and psychedelia by the Los Angeles artist who takes inspiration from the Beatles, philosopher Alan Watts, the storytelling of King Crimson, and the imagery of Fleet Foxes. After his excellent album of 2022 I’m Not Here, this title refers to a widened group of collaborators, an expanded sound and process, not least by enlisting veteran producer Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Father John Misty, Built to Spill) to mix the album. It’s a beautifully rich and serene piece of work, from the tinkling bells and gongs that opener first track The Gospel of Exiles, Izenberg’s relaxed vocals with horns to the Beatles-esque and country-flecked An Obscured Odyssey, or the fabulous easygoing plod of The Wraith Behind Our Eyes. Folk, psych, country and rock combine on the delcious slow groove of Drinking The Dusk Away. Capturing another era, this is a record to relax to, with other standouts including the piano-based country Only The Moon Knows, and above all the superb shuffle of Pareidolia, pertaining to the state of perceiving a specific, often meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern: “Love in the time of Rhiannon / I’ll build a castle with a view/ Burning clouds of Venus/ Above the temple of a kept woman / Drowned when the light blossomed to the dream/ Crimson majesties unfading for the queen.” Let it float into your subconscious - a gorgeous album to transport you to another time and place. Out on Weird World / Domino.
