The Welsh singer-songwriter Gwenno Saunders returns with a sunny upbeat, Smiths-feel guitar jangling nostalgic number about dancefloors that no longer exist, heralding her fourth LP, Utopia, her first predominantly in English after her previous Cornish and Welsh language releases. Out on Heavenly Recordings / PIAS.
Commenting on the track, she reflects on memories of: “Jarvis Cocker dancing alone on stage, surrounded by dry ice, perfectly conveying the loss of our congregational dancing and drinking in small venues with a slight swing of the hip and flick of a hand... dancing 'til 5am at Le Mandela restaurant in Grangetown, Cardiff... the Pet Shop Boys' perfectly aimed observations on modern life... the spirit of Johnny Marr on guitar, his echoes of the Celtic sea passed down through the generations... the need to dance as a cathartic act... it's all here - Dancing on Volcanoes!”

You’ll ask me for a cigarette
But we don’t go out anymore
Who becomes your Mother?
And who becomes your Father?
The dictators are dictating
We’ll keep dancing on volcanoes
Has it changed beyond measure?
Have all the foundations gone?
Have we found a new clever?
Are we all here because of trauma?
Did we all lose something somewhere?
Do you remember when you were nine or ten
When everything shattered?
You’ll ask me for a cigarette
But we don’t go out anymore
Who becomes your Mother?
And who becomes your Father?
The dictators are dictating
We’ll keep dancing on volcanoes
And I was never any good at being young
You lose and you win some
She came in from the West
Whatever that means
The grit of time got stuck
Between my teeth
You’ll ask me for a cigarette
But we don’t go out anymore
Who becomes your Mother?
And who becomes your Father?
The dictators are dictating
We’ll keep dancing on volcanoes
Are we all here because of trauma?
Did we all lose something somewhere?
Do you remember when you were nine or ten
When everything shattered?
You’ll ask me for a cigarette
But we don’t go out anymore
Who becomes your Mother?
And who becomes your Father?
You’ll ask me for a cigarette
But we don’t go out anymore
Who becomes your Mother?
And who becomes your Father?
The dictators are dictating
We’ll keep dancing on volcanoes
