Following several great singles, brilliantly amusing, quirky and marvellously melodic debut by the Berlin indie-pop artist, whose talent for wry, ironic humour and talk-sing delivery really tickles on variety of unusual and highly specific subjects. Mimicking varies third-person perspectives, they range from a low-key disagreement and about personal height (the superbly shuffling opener 170) playing with a sense of scale, a parody of a grumpy, idiotic review of a the titular Botanical Garden (“they would not allow us to pick our favourite flowers”), or an unfortunate visit to a public Spa, where a swimming costume has been forgotten, causing ripples of minor rule-breaking disapproval, but also summoning up some fabulously oddball, squeaky sounds. Package, about delivery gone awry and an unhappy neighbour, also plays with some truly eccentric noise craft. Hot Family is a catchy number and weirdly sinister (see the video) number about having a crush on an attractive family (“these people look like a bunch of angels, I can almost see them floating above the pavement”). The woozy, country-ish Stash is all about the tricky issue and consequences of finding cash on the street. Another beautifully catchy indie standout, the single Not Rick, (referencing Mr Rubin) centres on a Mexican tarot card reading and seeking enlightenment and the strangely alluring half-rhyme, “Alright then, I’m heading for enlight(en)ment.” The dreamy blips and beats of Teeth on The King completes the set of wonderful eccentric originality, songs capturing life’s oddball absurdities. Fabulously charming, funny and endearing. Out on Radicalis Music.
