A candid, uncompromising, starkly personal and powerful rap-folk-R&B LP by the Trinidad-born 28-year-old east Londoner Berwyn Du Bois, who among other emotions, captures his experiences of Britain’s hostile environment immigration policy since arriving in the UK aged 9 in 2005. His work is at its most effective when stripped back and without the ever present wobbly Auto-Tune. The poem-letter number Dear Immigration is inspired by his experience of being blocked to return to the country after touring in the Netherlands, with added reference to 20 years of childhood worries. The title track and I Am Black, and All She Ever Wanted merge R&B and reggaeton, while Without You and Mama are among the strongest, most heartfelt, stripped-back tracks. Following his Demotape/Vega and Tape 2/Fomalhaut mix-tapes, Berwyn has a talent for slick wordplay and emotive lyrics, at their best when most vulnerable. Out on Sony Records.
