Eclectic, original, energised and experimental, this is an enthralling third post-punk, pop, rock and thunderous concoction release by the Vancouver collective led by drummer and lead vocalist Zach Choy filled with the the passionate and oddball, and a broad range of instruments including strings and a brass section. If it has an overall theme, it is self-fulfilling prophecy of creativity overcoming trauma. Like 2020’s album Pain Olympics – there are also echoes of those arch-eclectics, XTC, and here also Australian contemporaries Tropical Fuck Storm, especially on the closing track Crackin Up with angular postpunk guitars, screaming vocals and oddball criss-cross melodies. Overall it is wash with voices and cultural references, such as the fast voice inserts of terms and conditions on Virtuous Industry. Highlights include previous Song of the Day Please Yourself, based around the aspirations of the teenage bedroom wall but also affected by the paradoxical engineered illusions of the media industry, and the angry, shouty Clash-inspired Costly Engineered Illusion. The title track quietly builds and falls with rich vocal harmonies and a remorseless rhythm. Utterly different, unexpected, and restlessly inspiring. Out on Meat Machine
